Since finding a selection of sheets of vintage matchbox labels (proofs) I’ve found out that they’re quite collectible, even with their own name ‘phillumeny’, which covers everything from matchbox labels, to matchbooks and matchbox holders.
There are some fabulous designs I’ve come across associated with all sorts of matchbox products, such as travel, drinks and of course, tobacco. We had a selection of vintage 1960s BOAC matchbooks for sale on the website a little while ago, as you can imagine they sold quickly.
The sheets of labels we have for sale were made in Belgium, for what is now the company Swedish Match. Most of them are from 1950s-1970s. All of these sheets of matchbox labels would look great framed, some are also quite large at almost 100cms wide, so would look fab on a large wall. I like the repetition on the sheets and some of the colours we have a vibrant, particularly the Camp safety matches and ‘Au Soleil Levant’ – the rising sun safety matches.
The repetition on these sheets looks great:
They would look great hanging in a lounge or kitchen, but especially in a pub or bar.
